Paying with insurance

Social Security and Private Insurance

If you work in Thailand legally, you almost certainly pay into the social security fund — and it includes a dental allowance most people never use. Here is exactly what it covers here.

Do you have this cover?

Social security (ประกันสังคม) is the Thai state scheme. If you are employed in Thailand on a work permit, contributions come out of your pay every month, and foreign employees are entitled to the same benefits as Thai employees.

If you are retired here, self-employed without registering, or on a marriage or tourist visa, you are most likely not in the scheme, and this page will not apply to you.

What it pays for here

The clinic has an agreement with the Social Security Office, so you can use the allowance here directly.

900 THB per person, per year

It covers scaling, fillings and extractions, with no limit on the number of visits until the allowance runs out.

The allowance resets each calendar year and does not carry over. If you have not used it by December, it is gone.

Wisdom teeth are counted separately

Surgical removal of a wisdom tooth is handled under different rules from the annual allowance above, and the amount the fund pays depends on the case.

Call us before your appointment and say that you are in the social security scheme. We will check what your case can claim and what paperwork to bring, rather than working it out at the counter on the day.

What to bring

For Thai nationals it is a national ID card. As a foreign employee, bring your social security card and your passport, and it helps to know the name of the hospital you are registered with.

Being confirmed with the clinic: whether you can use the allowance without paying up front here, or whether you pay and claim it back. We will publish the exact answer rather than guess at it — call and ask, and we will tell you what applies to your case today.

Private insurance and travel insurance

Being confirmed with the clinic: which insurers we can bill directly, if any. Assume for now that you pay the clinic and claim it back yourself.

We can give you a receipt and a medical certificate in English with the treatment listed, which is what most insurers ask for. Tell the front desk before you pay, because the paperwork has to be issued on the day.

Two things worth checking in your own policy before you come: most travel policies only cover emergency dental pain relief, not planned work; and most private health policies in Thailand exclude dentistry altogether unless you bought a dental add-on.

The government "gold card" scheme

We are not part of the universal coverage (gold card) scheme. Only social security and private insurance apply here.

Not sure what you have?

Send us a photo of your card on LINE or WhatsApp, or call 091-859-9292 and tell us what you have. We will check it before your appointment so there are no surprises when you come to pay.
