Children's Dentistry

A child who is forced through treatment before they are ready is often frightened of dentists for years. We would rather spend the first visit getting to know each other.

The first visit is not a treatment visit

Your child sits in the chair, makes it go up and down, holds the mirror and looks at their own teeth. Then the dentist counts the teeth, one at a time, out loud.

If your child is ready that day, we carry on. If not, we book another visit and nothing is lost — they have already met the place once, and the next time is much easier.

Filmed here, during an ordinary check-up.

Notice that the child holds the bib the whole time. We ask them to, because holding something gives a child a sense of control. And we tell every child the same thing before we start: put your hand up and the dentist stops.

Language

Our dentists speak English with you and with your child. If your child speaks neither Thai nor English well, come in with them and translate — that works better than us guessing.

Explaining things to a child before they happen is part of how this is done here. Nothing is started without telling them what it will feel like.

"They are only baby teeth"

Parents ask this often, and it is a fair question. Baby teeth do matter, for three concrete reasons.

  • They hold the space for the adult teeth. When a baby tooth is lost too early, the teeth beside it lean into the gap. The adult tooth then has nowhere to come up and arrives crooked — and orthodontic treatment later costs many times what a filling does now.
  • Decay reaches the nerve faster than in an adult tooth. The layer of tooth is thinner, so what looks like a small hole on the outside is often deeper than it looks.
  • It hurts. Children often do not say so. They chew on one side, eat less, or wake in the night. Parents usually find out at the stage where it already hurts a lot.

Fluoride and sealants are not the same thing

Fluoride treatment

Fluoride is applied across the whole mouth. It hardens the enamel so it stands up better to the acid bacteria produce — sunscreen for the teeth, in effect. It can be done from the first baby tooth onwards.

Fissure sealant

The deep grooves on the chewing surface of a molar are filled in so food cannot pack into them. It closes the one spot a brush cannot reach, and is usually done when the first adult molars come through.

Both are in the price list at the bottom of this page.

When to bring them for the first time

From the first baby tooth, or by their first birthday at the latest. Not because anything needs treating, but so the dentist can check the teeth are coming through normally and show you how to brush them while there is still no problem.

After that, every six months. Decay found as a small hole is quick to fill, means a short time in the chair, and costs less than one found deep.

Call 091-859-9292 to book. We are open every day, 10:00–19:00. Tell us it is for a child and we will give you a slot when the clinic is quieter.

What is waiting for them here

  • Sunglasses with flowers on themSo the lamp is not in their eyes. Some children ask to take them home.
  • A play corner of their ownAway from the adult waiting area, so the wait is playing rather than worrying.
  • A present at the endEvery time, whatever was or was not done that day.
  • You sit beside the chairParents stay in the room. Your child can see your face the whole time.

If your child needs more than a filling

Sometimes decay has reached the nerve of a baby tooth, and the tooth still has years of work to do before it falls out on its own. In those cases the dentist treats the nerve and covers the tooth with a stainless steel crown, which lasts until the tooth is due to come out naturally.

When a baby tooth cannot be saved and has to come out early, a space maintainer holds the gap open so the adult tooth has somewhere to arrive. Both are in the price list below.

Very young children, and children who cannot cope with treatment while awake, sometimes need care under general anaesthetic in a hospital. We do not do that here — if your child needs it, the dentist will tell you and point you to a hospital that does.
